Irish Academy of Arms
Acadamh Armas na hÉireann
In order to recognise the progression of fencers in their learning and expertise in fencing, the Irish Academy of Arms instituted an award programme that has encouraged and validated fencers outside the 'white heat' of direct competition.
The Bronze Blade, Silver Blade and Gold Blade are awarded in foil, épée and sabre, and are designed to ensure fencers’ familiarity and knowledge of both technical fencing actions and the vocabulary which allows them to describe and analyse fencing actions, both their own and those of other fencers.
The awards allow fencers to measure their achievements and progress outside direct competition where they may be (initially) disadvantaged by their lack of bouting experience.
